The definition of femininity concerns a set of beliefs, which do not constitute absolute truths, but rather conceptual constructions that are inherent in societies and change alongside them. The way in which language is used, imposes a specific structure on the formation of the concept of “woman” and on the way it is communicated in the social context in which it is used. Gender classifies, hierarchises and limits as a basic system that perpetuates specific powers and balances, from the gendered division of labour to the structure of the bourgeois family.
Gender roles, as social constructs, stereotypically dictate the social behaviour and functioning of the sexes, creating a disproportionate burden on the widely oppressed female gender. A good girl has to be beautiful, sweet, clean, polite, tender, caring and patient; she has to be a good daughter, sister, mother. A good girl is obedient, she does not speak, she does not resist.
Good girl exemplar:
A girl plays with two dolls and scolds them to behave. She herself looks like a doll, not only because she is a beautiful and good girl, but also because she does not bother anyone.
